During winter, rapid temperature changes\u2014cold nights followed by bright, sunny days\u2014can cause the bark to crack, a problem known as sunscald.<\/p>\n

Applying a light-colored coating helps reflect sunlight, keeping the trunk from overheating and lowering the risk of splitting or long-term damage.
