My alarm goes off at 5:30 every morning.<\/p>\n

Before I\u2019m fully awake, I\u2019m already in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Not because I\u2019m hungry\u2014but because I need to plan what\u2019s left. What we can afford. What my little sister Robin will eat for breakfast, what goes into her lunch, what I save for dinner.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s automatic now. A routine I don\u2019t question anymore.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m 21. I should be in college, figuring out my life, making mistakes like everyone else my age.<\/p>\n

Instead, I work nights at a hardware store and pick up extra shifts whenever I can. Robin stays with our neighbor until I get home.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s our life now.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t perfect, but it\u2019s stable enough to survive.<\/p>\n

Our parents died in a car accident when I was 17 and Robin was 8. After that, I became her guardian. I didn\u2019t trust the system to take care of her, so I stepped in.<\/p>\n

And just like that, everything else stopped mattering.<\/p>\n

I learned how to stretch money, how to cook cheap meals, how to make sure she never felt like she was missing out.<\/p>\n

Robin is twelve now. She\u2019s smart, kind, always reading or asking questions. I\u2019ve done everything I can to make sure she still gets to be a kid.<\/p>\n

Until the jacket.<\/p>\n

It was something small, but it mattered to her. She had wanted it for a while, and I saved for it, bit by bit, until I could finally buy it.<\/p>\n

When I gave it to her, she hugged me like it meant everything.<\/p>\n

But a few days later, she came home holding it in pieces.<\/p>\n

Ripped. Damaged. Ruined by kids at school who laughed while they did it.<\/p>\n

She tried to smile it off, but I saw her face. I knew how much it hurt.<\/p>\n

Robin was sitting quietly in a chair.<\/p>\n

Across from her were three students\u2014and their parents.<\/p>\n

And on the principal\u2019s desk were printed messages, photos, and notes.<\/p>\n

Evidence.<\/p>\n

Not just about the jacket.<\/p>\n

But weeks, maybe months, of bullying.<\/p>\n

Things Robin had never told me.<\/p>\n

I felt my chest tighten as I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d I asked softly.<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to make things harder for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hit harder than anything else.<\/p>\n

Because she wasn\u2019t just being protected by me.<\/p>\n

She was trying to protect me too.<\/p>\n

The principal spoke carefully, explaining why everyone had been called in.<\/p>\n

The room was tense\u2014parents uncomfortable, students silent, excuses forming but not fully spoken.<\/p>\n

But for once, everything was out in the open.<\/p>\n

No hiding. No minimizing.<\/p>\n

I walked over and placed my hand gently on Robin\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n
