I got home earlier than usual that Friday, juggling four kids and a car full of groceries. It was the usual chaos\u2014juice boxes leaking, backpacks everywhere, my toddler screaming because they wanted food immediately.<\/p>\n

The kids ran inside ahead of me while I stayed behind to grab the bags. A moment later, my eight-year-old came rushing back out, her face pale.<\/p>\n

My mind spun. \u201cThat\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears filled her eyes. \u201cHe said if I tried to leave, he\u2019d hurt you. Or the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

A door slammed.<\/p>\n

My husband stood on the porch.<\/p>\n
