My father never spoke about her. Her name was never mentioned, not on birthdays, not during holidays, not even in those quiet moments when her absence felt the loudest. Whenever I asked, he would respond in the same calm, firm tone:<\/p>\n

Then, on my eighteenth birthday, everything changed.<\/p>\n

It was a normal day at my part-time job at a grocery store. I was stocking shelves when I suddenly felt someone watching me. When I looked up, I saw a woman standing at the end of the aisle, shaking slightly, her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

Something about her felt familiar.<\/p>\n

She was the cleaning lady from my school\u2014Mrs. Jenkins. For years, she had quietly worked in the background, sweeping floors and tidying classrooms.
