I slowly pushed open his bedroom door, my heart hammering in my chest so loudly I could barely hear anything else.<\/p>\n

The room was dark except for the faint glow of his nightlight. My son sat upright in bed, gripping his blanket tightly, staring toward the corner of the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy\u2026\u201d he whispered, pointing shakily.<\/p>\n

At first, I saw nothing unusual. Only shadows. The toy chest. The chair in the corner. A pile of clothes waiting to be folded. Relief almost made me laugh.<\/p>\n

Then the chair moved.<\/p>\n

Not slightly. Not from settling.<\/p>\n

It slowly slid across the floor.<\/p>\n

I froze instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you see him?\u201d my son asked softly.<\/p>\n

A cold feeling swept through me. \u201cSee who?\u201d I managed to whisper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tall man,\u201d he replied. \u201cHe comes when you\u2019re asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every instinct told me to run, but I forced myself farther into the room. \u201cThere\u2019s nobody here,\u201d I said, though my voice shook.<\/p>\n

Then I heard it.<\/p>\n

A slow breath.<\/p>\n

Not mine.<\/p>\n

Not my son\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Behind me.<\/p>\n

I spun around, but the hallway outside the room was empty. Still, the air felt thick\u2014like someone unseen was standing right beside me.<\/p>\n

My son quickly pulled the blanket over his head. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t like when you look at him,\u201d he murmured.<\/p>\n

Fear crawled down my spine. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me before?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried,\u201d he whispered. \u201cBut you said he wasn\u2019t real.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went completely silent.<\/p>\n

Then suddenly, right beside my ear, a voice whispered so closely I felt its breath:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow she believes.\u201d<\/p>\n
