I almost didn\u2019t go.<\/p>\n

When she called, her voice sounded faint\u2014nothing like the sharpness I remembered. No anger this time, just exhaustion. Still, I couldn\u2019t forget our last conversation: her shouting in the doorway while I stood my ground, convinced I was simply being fair.<\/p>\n

In the end, I went more out of curiosity than anything else.<\/p>\n

The address wasn\u2019t where I expected. It led to a small, aging apartment on the edge of town\u2014cracked paint, broken windows, everything worn down by time. A tight feeling settled in my chest as I knocked.<\/p>\n

It took a while before the door finally opened.<\/p>\n

And when it did, I barely recognized her.<\/p>\n

She stepped aside and let me in. The apartment was almost empty\u2014a single chair, a small table, and a bed in the corner. No photos, no warmth, nothing that felt like a home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t take much of your time,\u201d she said as she lowered herself into the chair. \u201cI just need you to know the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

My chest tightened. \u201cWhat truth?\u201d<\/p>\n

She studied me for a long moment, as if deciding whether I was ready to hear it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father didn\u2019t just leave me ten thousand dollars,\u201d she said softly. \u201cThat was everything he had left.\u201d<\/p>\n

I frowned. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was sick for a long time,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe treatments, the hospital stays\u2026 I paid most of it. I sold my jewelry. Took out loans. I never told you because he didn\u2019t want you to carry that burden.\u201d<\/p>\n

A cold weight spread through my chest.<\/p>\n

All this time, I had seen her as entitled. Greedy, even.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d I asked, barely able to speak.<\/p>\n

She gave a tired, almost sorrowful smile. \u201cWould you have believed me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

Because I knew I wouldn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n

She reached for a small envelope on the table and placed it in my hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father wrote this,\u201d she said. \u201cHe wanted you to have it one day. I think that day is now.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands shook as I opened it.<\/p>\n

Inside was a short note, written in his familiar handwriting.<\/p>\n

My vision blurred instantly.<\/p>\n
