Naturally, she immediately panicked. She spent the whole morning overthinking everything I might have said or done. By the time she arrived at the school, she was already worried the worst was coming.<\/p>\n

The psychologist welcomed her into a small office and sat her down across from a table with a few printed images laid out in front of them: potatoes, carrots, and beets.<\/p>\n

My mom tried to laugh it off, explaining that I often helped her cook at home.<\/p>\n

The psychologist seemed to agree\u2014and explained that the test wasn\u2019t about right or wrong answers, but about how children think. Most kids categorized the images simply as \u201cvegetables\u201d or \u201cfood.\u201d Some even gave emotional responses like \u201cthings I don\u2019t like.\u201d But my answer skipped labels entirely and focused on purpose\u2014what those items become in real life.<\/p>\n

Potatoes turn into fries or soup. Carrots are snacks or part of meals. Beets end up in recipes or stain everything in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

That, according to the psychologist, actually showed strong practical thinking rather than anything concerning.<\/p>\n

My mom relaxed a little. \u201cSo she\u2019s normal?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCompletely normal,\u201d the psychologist reassured her. \u201cShe just thinks in a very functional way.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the conversation didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

Earlier that same week, the class had been asked what a chair is used for. Most children said, \u201csitting.\u201d My answer was, \u201cstanding on it to reach high places.\u201d Another time, when asked about a bed, others said \u201csleeping,\u201d while I said \u201creading, hiding snacks, or pretending to be sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t describe things by their official purpose. I described them by how they could actually be used.<\/p>\n

By the end of the meeting, my mom was no longer worried. She was amused. As we left the school, she finally asked, \u201cWhy did you say ingredients?\u201d<\/p>\n

I shrugged. \u201cBecause that\u2019s what they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re vegetables,\u201d she corrected me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure,\u201d I said. \u201cBut vegetables don\u2019t do<\/em> anything. Ingredients do.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that was the end of it.<\/p>\n

Even years later, the story still comes up at family gatherings\u2014usually whenever someone tries to correct how I \u201cshould\u201d see things.<\/p>\n

Because for me, it was never about labels.<\/p>\n

It was about function, purpose, and possibility.<\/p>\n

Some people see categories. I see use.<\/p>\n
