My flight had been delayed for several hours, and after finishing yet another cup of coffee, I was simply watching the crowds drift through the terminal. That’s when I noticed a little boy, no older than six, walking alone.<\/p>\n

He looked frightened.<\/p>\n

No worried parent was following him, no one was calling his name, and everyone around him seemed too busy to notice a child wandering through the airport by himself.<\/p>\n

I watched him for a minute, hoping an adult would appear.<\/p>\n

No one did.<\/p>\n

The uneasy feeling in my stomach kept growing. His nervous eyes reminded me of how I used to look whenever I felt completely alone as a kid.<\/p>\n

Before I could talk myself out of it, I got up and walked over.<\/p>\n

“Hey, buddy,” I said gently, making sure not to scare him. “Are you okay?”<\/p>\n

He stopped immediately.<\/p>\n

His tiny hands tightened around the straps of his backpack, and after a long pause, he slowly shook his head.<\/p>\n

“What\u2019s your name?” I asked, crouching down to his level.<\/p>\n

“Tommy,” he answered so quietly I almost couldn’t hear him.<\/p>\n

“Nice to meet you, Tommy. Do you know where your mom or dad is?”<\/p>\n

He hesitated before quietly answering, “No.”<\/p>\n

His eyes immediately filled with tears.<\/p>\n

I smiled reassuringly.<\/p>\n

“It’s okay. We’ll figure this out together. Do you have anything in your backpack that might tell us who you’re traveling with?”<\/p>\n

Without speaking, Tommy slipped the backpack off his shoulders and handed it to me.<\/p>\n

I expected to find a boarding pass, maybe an identification tag.<\/p>\n

Instead, as I searched through a few snacks and folded clothes, I found his airline ticket.<\/p>\n

The moment I read the last name printed on it, my heart nearly stopped.<\/p>\n

Harrison.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My last name.<\/p>\n

At first I convinced myself it had to be a coincidence.<\/p>\n

But when I looked back at Tommy, I suddenly noticed familiar features I’d somehow overlooked before\u2014his eyes, his nose, even the shape of his jaw reminded me of someone.<\/p>\n

That couldn’t be possible.<\/p>\n

I didn’t have children.<\/p>\n

In fact, I barely had any family left.<\/p>\n

Trying to stay calm, I tucked the ticket back into the bag.<\/p>\n

“Tommy,” I asked carefully, “what’s your dad’s name?”<\/p>\n

He frowned.<\/p>\n

“I just call him Dad.”<\/p>\n

Not exactly the answer I needed.<\/p>\n

“Is he here in the airport?”<\/p>\n

Tommy nodded.<\/p>\n

That was enough for me.<\/p>\n

I decided the safest thing was to bring him to airport security so they could announce his name over the loudspeakers.<\/p>\n

As we walked through the terminal together, one thought refused to leave my mind.<\/p>\n

Ryan.<\/p>\n

My older brother.<\/p>\n

The brother who disappeared from my life years earlier without a single explanation.<\/p>\n

I hadn’t spoken to him since.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, someone came rushing toward us.<\/p>\n

The man looked exhausted, scanning every face with panic.<\/p>\n

Then our eyes met.<\/p>\n

It was Ryan.<\/p>\n

Older.<\/p>\n

More tired.<\/p>\n

But unmistakably him.<\/p>\n

“Dad!”<\/p>\n

Tommy let go of my hand.<\/p>\n

Everything clicked into place.<\/p>\n

Ryan hurried over and wrapped Tommy in a relieved hug before looking up at me.<\/p>\n

For several seconds neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n

“So… it was you,” he finally whispered.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

“I found him wandering alone.”<\/p>\n

He swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

“Thank you.”<\/p>\n

There was an awkward silence between us, weighed down by years of distance neither of us knew how to bridge.<\/p>\n

Finally I asked the question already echoing inside my head.<\/p>\n

“He’s your son?”<\/p>\n

Ryan looked at Tommy before answering.<\/p>\n

“Yeah.”<\/p>\n

Hearing it out loud hit harder than I expected.<\/p>\n

My brother had built an entire life while I knew nothing about it.<\/p>\n

“I wish I’d known,” I admitted quietly.<\/p>\n

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to tell you… more than once.”<\/p>\n

“So why didn’t you?”<\/p>\n

His shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n

“Because I didn’t know how. Everything fell apart back then, and instead of fixing things, I ran.”<\/p>\n

The honesty caught me off guard.<\/p>\n

I’d spent years believing he simply stopped caring.<\/p>\n

Now I could see life hadn’t exactly been easy for him either.<\/p>\n

“I was angry,” I admitted.<\/p>\n

“I know,” he replied. “You had every reason to be.”<\/p>\n

Tommy looked back and forth between us, sensing something important but not understanding it.<\/p>\n

Then he smiled innocently.<\/p>\n

“So… are you my Uncle Ethan?”<\/p>\n

I laughed softly before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n

Ryan smiled too\u2014the first genuine smile I’d seen from him in years.<\/p>\n

“I guess he is,” Ryan answered.<\/p>\n

Tommy grinned.<\/p>\n

“Does that mean we’ll see each other again?”<\/p>\n

Ryan looked at me.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, neither of us looked away.<\/p>\n

I took a deep breath.<\/p>\n

“Yeah,” I finally said.<\/p>\n

“I think I’d like that.”<\/p>\n
