For millions of viewers, Petticoat Junction appeared to be one of the gentlest and most wholesome sitcoms on television.

The show had the cozy Shady Rest Hotel, the beloved Hooterville Cannonball, the three Bradley sisters, Uncle Joe, and a charming fictional town where even the biggest problems usually found a solution by the time the credits rolled.

Yet behind that seemingly simple world, plenty was happening behind the cameras.

Cast members came and went.

Several characters were played by different actors over the years.

Even the opening credits occasionally contained footage that no longer matched the cast members appearing in the episodes.

And one of the series’ most important stars was secretly dealing with a devastating illness while the production struggled to keep her character connected to the story.

One of the clearest examples of the show’s changing cast was the three Bradley sisters.

Betty Jo Bradley was the only sister whose actress remained unchanged throughout the entire series. Linda Kaye Henning portrayed Betty Jo from the show’s premiere through its seventh and final season.

Billie Jo, on the other hand, went through three different actresses.

Jeannine Riley originated the role. When Riley left the series, Gunilla Hutton stepped into the part. Meredith MacRae later replaced Hutton and continued as Billie Jo for the remainder of the show.

Bobbie Jo also received a new face.

Pat Woodell played Bobbie Jo during the first two seasons, after which Lori Saunders assumed the role.

To an occasional viewer, these casting changes may have simply blended into the ongoing story of Hooterville. The characters and setting remained familiar, so the changes might not have seemed particularly important.

Dedicated fans, however, couldn’t help but notice that the Bradley sisters were not always the same women they had first met.

One especially amusing example could be found in the show’s opening credits.

After Meredith MacRae replaced Gunilla Hutton as Billie Jo, the opening sequence wasn’t immediately changed. The familiar footage of the sisters climbing down from the water tower still included Hutton.

As a result, viewers could watch an episode featuring Meredith MacRae as Billie Jo, only to see Gunilla Hutton representing the same character during the opening.

The credit sequence also underwent another subtle adjustment.

For the first two seasons, the sisters were introduced in the order Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo, and Betty Jo.

Starting with season three, the order was changed to Betty Jo, Bobbie Jo, and Billie Jo.

It was a relatively minor detail, but it was another indication of how much the production was evolving behind the scenes.

There was also a fascinating casting possibility involving an actress who never actually became part of the regular cast.

Before Petticoat Junction made its television debut, Sharon Tate was reportedly considered for the role of Billie Jo. A promotional photograph was even taken featuring Tate with the cast.

Ultimately, however, she did not join the finished series.

The role instead went to Jeannine Riley, who became the original Billie Jo.

It’s interesting to imagine how different the show’s history might have looked if Tate had ultimately been chosen for the part.

Linda Kaye Henning’s connection to the series was also unusual.

She was the daughter of creator Paul Henning. Initially, her father was reluctant to let her audition because he worried that audiences might assume she had received the role simply because she was his daughter.

Henning eventually auditioned and proved herself capable of playing Betty Jo.

Her involvement in the series produced another remarkable coincidence.

Mike Minor later joined the cast as Steve Elliott. On the show, Steve and Betty Jo developed a romance and eventually became husband and wife.

Their relationship, however, wasn’t confined to the fictional world of Hooterville.

Linda Kaye Henning and Mike Minor also became romantically involved in real life and eventually married.

In other words, the on-screen romance between Betty Jo and Steve eventually became a real-life relationship between the two performers.

Henning also held a unique distinction among the Bradley sisters. She was the only actress who played one of the three sisters without ever being replaced during the show’s seven-season run.

Even the famous Hooterville Cannonball had its own continuity quirks.

Some of the train’s exterior shots used the historic Sierra No. 3 locomotive, while other scenes were created with studio sets, replicas, or other filmmaking techniques.

The train’s identification number also changed over the course of the series.

In earlier episodes, the Cannonball was associated with the number 3.

Later, viewers could see the train carrying the number 8.

The series never offered an explanation for the change. Hooterville simply accepted the train in whatever form the production happened to present it.

For modern fans, these inconsistencies can be amusing discoveries.

But one behind-the-scenes change was much more serious.

Bea Benaderet was one of the central figures of Petticoat Junction.

As Kate Bradley, she played the owner of the Shady Rest Hotel and the mother of the three Bradley sisters. Her warmth and personality helped give the series much of its familiar charm.

Then Benaderet’s health took a tragic turn.

She was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent treatment. As her condition worsened, she eventually had to reduce her involvement with the series.

The producers tried to adapt the show around her absence. New characters and storylines helped compensate for the fact that Kate Bradley could no longer appear as frequently.

There was still hope that Benaderet might return.

She eventually did.

Sadly, her comeback lasted only a short time.

At the start of the 1968–69 season, Benaderet managed to film only a handful of episodes before her illness became too severe for regular production work.

Her appearances became increasingly limited.

At the same time, the series was approaching a major storyline involving Betty Jo.

She was expecting a baby, creating an important family moment in which Kate Bradley would naturally have played a central role.

But Benaderet was too ill to participate in the scenes in the usual way.

The production team came up with an unusual solution.

Benaderet’s voice was recorded separately, while a stand-in appeared in scenes where the actress herself could not be shown clearly.

This allowed Kate Bradley to remain part of the story, even though Benaderet was no longer physically capable of performing the role normally.

For viewers at home, the episode still looked like another warm and familiar chapter in the life of the Bradley family.

Most had no idea how serious the circumstances were behind the scenes.

The production was essentially trying to preserve the presence of Kate Bradley while giving Bea Benaderet the opportunity to cope with her rapidly declining health.

That contrast makes the episodes especially poignant today.

On television, Hooterville remained the cheerful, comforting community audiences had come to love.

Behind the scenes, however, one of the performers who had helped give the series its heart was facing an extremely difficult and ultimately heartbreaking battle.
