When Mia’s stepmother, Trudy, threw herself a lavish 45th birthday, Mia had no choice but to obey every command—essentially acting as an invisible, unpaid helper.
But the universe has a funny way of keeping score.
I’m Mia, sixteen, living with my dad and Trudy. She’s been here two years—long enough to unpack her boxes and her ego. If “entitled” had a spokesperson, it would be her. Dad? The classic “happy wife, happy life” guy—except Trudy’s happiness is never satisfied.
Last Saturday, her birthday party was beyond over-the-top—marquee tents, caterers, floral overload. And me? Backstage crew.
A week before, she floated into the kitchen: “Mia, I want something special this year. A dishwasher would be nice. After all, I’ve done so much for you.”
Right. “Done so much,” as in micromanaging my life and preventing me from earning my own money. I explained my prom savings. She scoffed. “Excuses. A dishwasher is practical. No excuses.”
Fast forward to the party. I moved invisibly through the crowd, refilling drinks, wiping mirrors, taking care of everything while she soaked in the attention. Even Dad noticed, gently suggesting I take a break.
Then came the cake. Candles. Guests singing. And Trudy, with a saccharine smile: “Mia, since you didn’t get me a dishwasher, the least you can do is wash all these dishes.”
Twenty pairs of eyes turned. Humiliation burned. I nodded, changed, and scrubbed—grease, sauce, frosting. Pride stung, but I didn’t cry.
The next morning, chaos. The kitchen had flooded. Pipes burst. Fittings melted. Trudy stood paralyzed, shrieking. Dad explained the disaster: improper use of grease and chemicals. Repairs were catastrophic.
Then, unexpectedly, Dad made a declaration: he was giving me $500 for my prom dress. Trudy had no comeback. I finally felt protected.
After that, she stopped ordering me around, allowed me to get a real job, even offered to come dress shopping.
I found my dress. I felt seen, unstoppable.
The lesson? Trudy asked for a dishwasher. Karma gave her a flood. And somehow, I walked away with exactly what I deserved.
