Place a Balloon Over Your Shower Drain — You’ll Be Surprised by What Happens

Keeping cockroaches out of the bathroom can be frustrating, especially when they appear through the shower drain. These pests are naturally drawn to warm, damp areas, making bathroom plumbing a tempting pathway even in well-kept homes. Many people look for easy, low-effort ways to make drains less appealing, and one surprisingly effective solution uses a simple household item: a standard party balloon.

Cockroaches can slip through very small openings in plumbing. Shower drains are particularly vulnerable because they stay moist and often aren’t fully sealed. The balloon method works by slightly shrinking these gaps, making it more difficult for insects to crawl through, while still allowing water to drain normally.

To try this, remove the drain cover and cut off the top and bottom of a balloon, leaving a flexible rubber ring. Fit this ring around the underside or edge of the drain cover so that, when replaced, it forms a snug barrier. The goal isn’t to completely seal the drain, but to reduce openings that pests could exploit.

Used correctly, this provides a simple physical deterrent. It’s not a permanent solution, however, so you’ll need to check the drain regularly to ensure the balloon isn’t trapping debris or slowing water flow. If drainage issues arise, adjust or remove the balloon immediately.

For best results, combine this trick with general preventive measures: keep the bathroom dry, wipe wet surfaces, and clean drains routinely. Inspect areas around pipes for gaps or cracks and seal them, since cockroaches often enter behind walls or under floors rather than solely through drains.

Ultimately, effective pest control relies on layering multiple small strategies rather than a single trick. Simple, inexpensive steps like the balloon method can make a noticeable difference when paired with consistent maintenance. Regular checks and practical precautions can help reduce pests and keep your bathroom cleaner and more comfortable without relying on harsh chemicals.
