While my mother was in the hospital, my father and I went to her home to collect some of her personal belongings. It was meant to be a simple, practical visit—just going through a list of items. Nothing unusual was expected.
But everything changed when I opened her safe to retrieve a jewelry box.
Inside, I found a small handwritten note that immediately caught my attention. It said: “DON’T SHOW LUCY.”
The strange part? I am Lucy.
Beneath the note was an old VHS tape. My heart started racing as I picked it up, carefully looking around before taking it. I didn’t know what I was about to see, but I knew I needed answers.
Later, I managed to find a working VCR and inserted the tape. The screen flickered, then slowly came to life.
It immediately felt unsettling.
The tape looked aged, as though it had been hidden for years. It reminded me of something I once found in my grandmother’s attic—another forgotten box filled with old papers, faded photos, and a note that read: “Watch when you’re ready.” At the time, I had no idea what that meant.
Now, I felt the same uncertainty again.
The screen faded from black, and a familiar figure appeared.
My grandfather.
Even though he had passed away years ago, seeing him again felt unreal. He sat in his old chair, the one still placed near the fireplace, looking directly into the camera as if he was speaking only to me.
“If you’re watching this,” he said calmly, “then it’s time you learned the truth.”
My breath caught.
He paused, as if carefully choosing his words. “There is something I never shared,” he continued. “A secret I planned to take with me—but some things don’t stay hidden forever.”
I leaned closer, unable to look away.
“You must go to the old oak tree by the creek,” he instructed. “Dig two feet down. You’ll find something that belongs to our family—something that was lost long ago.”
Then suddenly, the screen cut to black.
I sat there in silence, staring at the empty screen, trying to process what I had just seen.
It didn’t feel like a story.
It felt like a message meant for me—and a secret that had been waiting years to finally be uncovered.
