Many people assume hives or skin rashes are harmless, but when they occur alongside breathing difficulties, they may indicate a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Hives are itchy, raised red welts that can spread across the body very quickly. Warning signs become more severe when they are accompanied by symptoms such as tightness in the throat or chest, difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or even fainting.

Common triggers include certain foods, medications, insect stings, latex, and other allergens — and these reactions can sometimes occur even in individuals with no known allergy history.

Medical experts stress that these symptoms can escalate rapidly. If hives appear together with breathing problems, it is critical to seek emergency medical care immediately and use an epinephrine auto-injector if one is available.

A rash combined with breathing issues should always be treated as an emergency, where quick action can make a life-saving difference.
