After my parents died in a devastating house fire, my six-year-old twin brothers had no one left except me. I was the one who carried them out of the burning house, and from that night on, I became their guardian. Thankfully, my fiancé, Mark, loved them as if they were his own and promised we’d adopt them as soon as we could.
The only person who refused to accept them was Mark’s mother, Joyce. She constantly claimed I was taking advantage of her son and insisted he should save his future for his “real” children. She ignored my brothers at family gatherings, insulted them, and even treated other children with kindness while deliberately excluding them.
Her cruelty reached a new level while I was away on a business trip. She arrived at our home carrying two packed suitcases, handed one to each boy, and told them they would soon be leaving to live with another family because they didn’t belong with us. Before leaving, she whispered that Mark deserved a “real family,” leaving the boys terrified that they were about to lose the only home they had left.
When I came home and heard what had happened, my heart shattered. Mark confronted his mother, but instead of apologizing, she insisted she had only been preparing the boys for reality. That was the moment we realized she could never be allowed to hurt them again.
A few weeks later, on Mark’s birthday, we invited Joyce over and told her we had life-changing news. I calmly announced that we had decided to let the boys go to another family. Joyce immediately celebrated, saying it was the best decision we could have made.
Then Mark stood up and revealed the truth.
“The boys aren’t going anywhere,” he said. “Tonight was to show us exactly who you are.”
He placed the same suitcases she had given the boys on the table, along with a letter informing her that she was no longer welcome in our lives or around the children until she sought professional help and sincerely apologized to them.
Joyce stormed out in anger, but we never looked back. Soon afterward, we blocked all contact, began the adoption process, and promised Caleb and Liam that they would always have a home with us.
Every night they ask, “Are we staying forever?”
And every night we give them the same answer.
“Forever and always.”
