Smallpox is widely remembered as one of the most destructive diseases humanity has ever faced. After years of coordinated international vaccination efforts, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially announced its eradication in 1980, making it the first and only human disease to be completely eliminated through vaccination.
Although smallpox no longer naturally circulates among people, researchers continue examining the virus, its evolution, and its historical impact. Scientists have discovered traces of smallpox-related genetic material in preserved remains, including ancient mummies and bodies found in frozen environments. These findings help researchers study how long viral material can survive over time, though the presence of genetic traces does not mean that a live, infectious virus remains.

In some cases, melting permafrost has exposed ancient microorganisms, encouraging researchers to carefully examine possible risks. However, experts have found no evidence that smallpox has returned from frozen remains.
Part of what made smallpox so dangerous was that its early signs could appear similar to other common illnesses. As the infection progressed, it developed into a severe rash with fluid-filled blisters that later turned into scabs. Historical documents and preserved remains have allowed scientists to better understand how the disease affected populations over centuries.
Research indicates that smallpox existed for thousands of years, with evidence of the disease appearing in ancient remains. Before vaccination programs were introduced, smallpox caused enormous suffering and millions of deaths around the world, leaving a lasting mark on human history.
Today, smallpox remains eradicated, but scientific research continues to study the virus and its legacy. Understanding past outbreaks helps researchers strengthen disease preparedness, improve medical knowledge, and support future efforts to protect global health.
