My heart sank the moment I stepped into the house and found it completely empty.
Not just quiet—abandoned. The sofa was gone, the photos that once lined the hallway had been taken down, and even the small pair of shoes that always sat by the door had disappeared without a trace.
For a moment, I wondered if I had come to the wrong place.
Then I noticed an envelope lying on the floor. My name was written on it in his handwriting.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
“He didn’t make it.”
The words blurred as I struggled to process them, but I kept reading anyway.
“We waited as long as we could. I kept hoping you would come back, that you would change your mind. He kept asking for you… even until the end.”
Tears fell onto the paper before I could stop them.
“I couldn’t stay there after that. I couldn’t remain in a place where every corner reminded me of what we lost—and what might have been saved.”
There was no anger in the message. Only a deep, quiet sadness—and that somehow hurt even more.
“I hope that one day you understand what this decision truly cost… not just him, but all of us.”
The letter slipped from my shaking hands.
I sank to the floor in the middle of a house that no longer felt like home, surrounded by a silence that felt overwhelming.
For the first time, a painful truth settled in my chest—
